How many towers are needed and how high are they?
The selected route needs just two towers, however to improve vegetation preservation, MWCC has opted to add an additional tower near the base station. A 2.1-kilometre span keeps towers off most of the mountain face, with the two foothill towers tall enough to protect the forest canopy underneath.
Further Detail:
Two towers near the base station lift the cabins above the 40 metre high forest canopy. From there, the cables span about 2.1 kilometres to the third tower near the summit. Using the steep terrain on this alignment avoids a series of extra towers across the mountain’s eastern slopes, which would be necessary on any alignment that avoids the Organ Pipes.
The tower heights respond to the trees, ground levels and clearance needed for the cabins. The summit tower is carefully positioned below the skyline when viewed from the city. Dark finishes and a compact design help the structures blend into the surrounding landscape, while the long span keeps the much loved terrain beneath it free of tower foundations.
